How to rock the ‘cool girl’ messy hair

Natural beauty is a passion of mine. God made it so, just as he created each one us of with the perfect combination of uniquely gorgeous features!  Whatever your natural hair texture is, you absolutely can rock it!

Today, I want to share some of my tips for pulling off {with confidence} the effortless, messy, French-girl inspired, tousled hair.  I know, you want to know how to do it with the coveted off duty model careless yet positively gorgeous vibe.  Here is my take on it…

1. Treat it {your hair} as if it were your best cashmere

This is a big one, you guys!   If you are trying to mask damage, it is very hard to leave your locks un-styled.   Until I learned how to take care of my hair properly, I could have never worn it natural like this.  Always treat your hair like a luxury item!  Do not over wash it.  The frequency of washing really depends on your hair type, but I would say three times per week should be the maximum.  Also, protect your hair from the sun {wear a hat} when you are spending long periods of time outdoors.  Limit exposure to chlorine, salt, bleach, and other chemical treatments.   Healthy hair shines no matter the texture, and the shine is what makes your hair look amazing in its natural state!

Oh…and get regular trims!  I go about every eight weeks.

2. Play up your favorite features

Although we tend to be our own worst enemy when it comes to evaluating our personal appearance, we all have features we like best.  And…of course, we all have our beauty MVPs.  The products that bring life to our favorite features.  One of my favorite features is my lips and I love to accentuate them with  YSL le rouge!  Also, I like a light coverage for my face that allows my healthy skin to show through.  Two of my favorites are Chanel Les Bieges and Bare Minerals.  Both even out skin tone very well without looking too matte or made up.

When we choose to let our hair do whatever it does naturally, it is a good idea to concentrate on glowing skin and either a bold lip or a defined, natural smokey eye.  For me, this keeps the tousled locks out of frumpy territory  and the vibe remains effortlessly chic.

3. Pay attention to details

Formulas for fool proof finished looks  are  best understood when broken down into the details.  Since, the undone hair is the element of focus in this post, I’m going to concentrate on how I would balance it to achieve the vibe I desire.  I have found that the best way to rock the messy waves is to add something polished {like a silk scarf} or something of the moment like pointy toe, flat mules… or both.  These elements allow the tousled locks to come off as intentional and stylish rather than frumpy.  A look can be un-fussy yet still totally chic.  Frumpy and un-fussy are totally different vibes.  I have seen messy hair look amazing when incorporated into both casual and very dressy looks.  It is all in the deliberate details and balance.  For me,  it can be stream lined black pieces, a red lip, heels, a simple & elegant piece of jewelry {like diamond studs}… but really it is just something you love and feel amazing in.

4. Shine on

Always add a bit of conditioning shine to your hair even if you are not using styling tools.   Two of my favorite products that leave my hair looking and feeling natural but enhance softness and shine are Moroccanoil and Kitoko oil.   I use the Moroccanoil every time I wash my hair.  For me,it is best applied on damp hair from the crown down to the ends.  The  Kitoko oil, I massage into my ends daily.  I love this product because it really soaks in to the hair and never ever leaves it looking greasy.

5. Inside Out BEAUTY

When we are healthy inside, it shines through.  It is so so important to choose healthy foods & beverages, get plenty of sleep and exercise, and drink water…lots of water.  Skin that glows and hair that shines absolutely has everything to do with eating a diet rich in omega 3s, fruits, veggies and staying hydrated!

I would love to know your hair care tips and favorite products!  Thanks for stopping by today, beauties
